Using this Program

Introduction

After starting the program, you can select two test options by clicking on the corresponding option:

  • Review
  • Test

These options are described in greater detail later in this Help section.

Navigating Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-RN 8th Edition CD-ROM

While creating your Review and Test with Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-RN 8th Edition CD-ROM, use the mouse to click on buttons and to fill in check boxes or radio buttons.

Question navigation

Your Review or Test will include Traditional and Alternate Item questions. Traditional questions consist of a question with four answer options. Only one of the answer options is correct. Alternate Item questions include multiple-choice questions that may require the selection of more than one response, fill-in-the-blank questions, or questions that ask you to identify an area on a picture or graphic.

In your Review or Test, you can use the mouse or keyboard to answer the question. When your answer is complete, click the Next button to proceed to the next question. Click on the Previous button to return to a previous question.

After completing a Test, click the Review button to see the correct answers and rationales.

Buttons

The following buttons appear in Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-RN 8th Edition:

Help

The Help button displays this Help file.

Menu

The Menu button returns you to the program's Main Menu.

Previous

The Previous button will move you to the previous screen or to the previous question in a Review or Test.

Next

The Next button will move you to the next screen or to the next question in a Review or Test.

Select All

The Select All button can be a real timesaver when you're developing a Review or Test. It enables you to include all listed nursing topics on your Review or Test with one click of the button.

Clear All

Much like the Select All button, the Clear All button also can save you time while developing a Review or Test. It enables you to remove all checked nursing topics from your Review or Test with one click of the button.

Calculator

Clicking the Calculator button will start the Calculator program. You can use Calculator to perform any of the standard operations for which you would normally use a handheld calculator.

Review

This button appears after a Test is completed. Clicking on Review allows you to review all the questions, your answers, the correct answers, and the rationales.

Print

The Print button allows you to print your Test results.

Results

The Results button allows you to return to your Test results when you are reviewing the questions in a Test that you just completed.

Rationale screen

The Rationale screen is the area located below the question-and-answer choices.

In a Review, the Rationale screen is blank until an answer is selected; then, the correct answer and rationales are displayed. In a Test, the rationales appear in this area only after you complete a Test and choose to view your answers.

Review

Why conduct a Review?

The Review option lets you answer questions, receive immediate feedback on your selection, and view the rationales for each answer. Your answers are not recorded.

Designing your Review

After you select the Review option on the Main Menu, the Review setup screen appears. Here, you make a choice to organize the content by topic. You can select any combination of nursing topics for your Review.

You may also click on the Select All or Clear All buttons to select or clear all topics.

When you have selected the desired subjects, click on Next to proceed to your Review.

Choosing the number of questions

After determining the content of your Review, you can limit the number of questions your Review should contain. You can select a 75-, 150-, or 265-question exam, or enter whatever number of questions you wish. The maximum number of questions is determined by the number of questions in the topics you select for your Review.

Conducting a Review

Traditional Questions

For each Traditional question, the screen initially displays the question and four possible answers. Questions are randomly chosen from the topics you selected.

Select an answer by clicking on the corresponding letter of your desired answer. Once you select an answer, the screen changes to show you:

  • the question
  • the four possible answers
  • the correct answer
  • your selection
  • the rationales for correct and incorrect options
  • the applicable nursing process step, client needs category, and client needs subcategory.

You can move from one question to another by clicking on the Next and Previous buttons. After completing all questions, you will be prompted to return to the Main Menu. You may click on the Menu button to return to the Main Menu at any time during your Review.

Alternate Format Questions

There are three types of Alternate Format questions. Questions are randomly chosen from the topics you selected.

For multiple-choice questions that may require the selection of more than one response, the screen initially displays the question and all the possible answers.

Select all answers that apply to the question. Then, click the Check Answer button. The screen changes to show you:

  • the question
  • all the possible answers
  • the correct answers
  • your selections
  • the rationales for correct and incorrect options
  • the applicable nursing process step, client needs category, and client needs subcategory.

For fill-in-the-blank questions, the screen initially displays the question and a blank answer box for you to enter your answer.

Enter your answer to the question. Then, click the Check Answer button. The screen changes to show you:

  • the question
  • the correct answer
  • your answer
  • the rationales for correct and incorrect options
  • the applicable nursing process step, client needs category, and client needs subcategory.

For questions that ask you to identify an area on a picture or graphic, the screen initially displays the question and the graphic.

Click an area on the graphic to post your answer to the question. Then, click the Check Answer button. The screen changes to show you:

  • the question
  • the correct answer indicated by a green rectangle
  • your answer
  • the rationales for correct and incorrect options
  • the applicable nursing process step, client needs category, and client needs subcategory.

You can move from one question to another by clicking on the Next and Previous buttons. After completing all questions, you will be prompted to return to the Main Menu. You may click on the Menu button to return to the Main Menu at any time during your Review.

Test

Why take a Test?

The Test section simulates testing conditions, allowing you to respond to random questions and record your answers. After you complete a Test, you can view the results and then see your responses along with the correct answers and rationales.

Selecting Test topics

After selecting the Test option, the Test setup screen appears. Here, you make a choice to select the content of your Test by topic. You can select any combination of nursing topics.

You may also click on the Select All or Clear All buttons to select or clear all topics.

After selecting the topics you want, click on Next.

What your Test results tell you

The results of your Test will be displayed so that you can gauge your progress. In addition to your overall score, your performance will be broken out by the individual nursing topics covered in your Test.

You may print your results by clicking on the Print button.

Reviewing answers and rationales

The Results screen has a button that allows you to review your Test questions. Clicking on the Review button allows you to review all items in the current Test regardless of how you answered them.
